CERAMICS IS FUN!

Hey Everyone!

So it’s been quite a while since I last posted things have been in full swing getting everything completed and ready for my degree show in a few weeks time! I just thought I’d update you on a few things, my degree show is open to the public on the Saturday 28th May 2016. {so very very soon}  I have been working very hard this past week getting everything hung and up on the walls ready for marking and then the exhibition to follow. {photos of my exhibition will be up soon}

Today I thought is give you a little insight to some of the work that I have been doing along side my print work. I am a drawer at heart which is why I love print so much, however I also have a love and passion for ceramics, which is something that I will always love but not necessarily always do. Here I have included some photos of the ceramics pieces that I have produced for my identity project.

I decided to keep the pieces purely bisk fired, I like the matt finish and the simplicity of the pieces, they are very different from the work I have been producing in print. However I am really liking the soft contradiction they have to my bolder prints. Another thing I love about these vessels is the way in which they are so simple that nothing is there to distract you from the simple markings of the facial expressions, which is the main focus of these pieces, the structure of the faces is also a big part so again with them being so plain and simple the main focus is upon what it built on to the vessel itself.

I think these work really well with my project and I am glad that I took some time out from print when I lost focus and made these vessels as an outcome, they really help hold together and enhance the idea behind my project.

So yes ceramics is FUN!

Speak to you again very soon!

DADA INSPIRED EXHIBTIION

So here is another inspired post because I was lucky enough to take part in an exhibition curated by the 2nd year students at my university which was running alongside a professional artists exhibition in the Sidney Cooper Gallery, Canterbury. and to top it all of my artwork was chosen to be shown in the gallery alongside John Stezaker’s works. It was an amazing opportunity and I feel so blessed to be able to have taken part in such an inspired experience. The piece of work I produced was heavily inspired by Hannah Hoch and her own work from the DADA period. I was also influenced in producing this piece though my own professional practice. I have been looking at identity and I think this piece has worked well to portray this concept though the weird and wonderful ways of the Dada movement. Without this movement work like mine would probably not be excepted as art. However the DADA movement opened up so many doors and opportunities for what was called ‘anti-art’ and the world rejoiced at being able to express themselves freely and with no regrets.

I feel doing this project has also opened up many doors for me, I feel as though this DADA project has inspired my work an incredible amount and I believe that it really shows in my more recent pieces just how much i have taken from this project. I have used the idea of collage and mixed media and i have taken this into my work and I feel that this has only made my work stronger.

Thank you if you made it to the end of this post! You’ll hear from me again soon!

NEARING THE END!

Hey Friends!

It’s been a while since I last posted but I have been extremely busy with my most recent exhibition and my final year project for university as you all well know, it is fast approaching and I have been working on bringing together some final pieces! I have loved using the photo transfer paper and incorporating that into fabric prints (done on calico.) And I have been working on incorporating sewing and texture into my work. I am thinking of developing my sewing further, perhaps physical objects to represent my different personalities.

You can see from these photographs below that I also have started adding in lino cutting to the mix. I think that has really added a diverse effect and contrast to the etchings that you usually see in my work. I feel like this has shown a big step in developing my project in its final stages and the bold appearance like I said is great in contrast to the light lines of an etching. it rivals the aquatints that I have produced previously.

I shall update you all again very soon!

DEVELOPING MY PROJECT!

I just thought I’d give you a brief explanation of how my final year project has been developing. It started out focusing on the idea of different emotions and how you can experience all of these emotions either at separate times or simultaneously. {see below images for examples of the work talked about.} I came up with five separate prints all square, each showing a different emotion. Emotions that I believe to be important, Things like anger or happiness, or sadness. All of these feelings are okay to be felt and its even more than okay to feel two or more at the same time. I then developed this into a print where you can see the change in facial expression going across the image. I also produced a portrait with a neutral expression using the technique of Aquatint. which I begun to love and have used a lot in my project. I feel like this really bring my portraits to life, it gives then a feel of character or personality, it just adds a bit more realism to my prints. I then proceeded to work into my aquatint print with words and ‘speech bubbles.’ I tried various ways of trying to express how you can feel these emotions and feel overwhelmed sometimes.

I have also used textiles to add a more personal, homely and comforting feel to my project. I always associate the use of fabric and textiles to that of materialistic objects you find around your home, such as towels or pillows or quilts. Something you may use as haven or comforter, and this is also a big part of my project, about how no matter how emotional or stressed or upset you may feel, you always have those thoughts or memories that can make you feel happier and help you deal with situations, just like a home is usually looked upon as a safe haven, where no harm can come to you.

so this is how my project started to come together. I have developed further since this point and it is growing all the time. However these ideas are still there in my work. Hope this helps you understand my project a little bit more.

MY SKETCHBOOK

Today I am posting about my sketchbooks. I always find they look like such a mess! They never look particular good or creative like some other artists sketchbooks that I have seen. Mine are often messy and all over the place. I try not to spend to much time working on my sketchbooks, they tend to just be a place for me to jot down ideas and sketch down thoughts before I develop them into actual pieces of physical artworks. I have many different types of sketchbooks, I have books just for drawing and sketching, ones for ideas and thoughts and others just with artists that I like and have looked at. These few images below are from one of my ideas sketchbooks from the beginning of my project. Here you can see where some of my ideas have actually come from.

I did a lot of collage and note taking. asking myself questions, where did I want this to go? what did I want my project to focus on?

Hopefully you can see from looking at other posts that this jotting down of ideas has paid off and you can see where and how  my work has developed.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT!

Hello Friends! Seeing as it has been a rather long time since I last posted I realised I never introduced to you all my final year project, I believe I mentioned it in a previous post {SEW, SEW, SEW, ALL DAY LONG} however I haven’t explained much about it.

For third year of university you focus on just the one project, whereas it was multiple the past few years. I decided to go with a personal project as this seems to be where my better grades come from. I wanted something I could connect with and stay intrigued with for the whole year. and It’s nearly over now and I seem to be doing pretty well. I feel like I have really begun to engage in the project recently and that make work is beginning to come together to look like a portfolio or work.

I have numerous sketchbooks and research to support my work and this is what you can see in the photos of this post. but please remember this isn’t all of it by any means and I shall post more soon. {my prints and development work will be included in other posts}

I haven’t come up with a final title for my project as of yet. However my work is mostly based around myself, my thought, feeling, emotions, basically anything that goes on inside my head. So maybe a title like ‘Identity’ might work. As I am looking at myself and seeing what makes up my own identity, what makes me, me! It has been an interesting project so far and I have focused a lot on the imagery and portraiture used throughout my prints.

I have done a lot of sketching of faces to develop my skills and abilities to draw facial features in my own unique way. I’m not going for some photographic replica of a person in my sketching I’m looking for something that makes my work stand out. I believe that I am getting there, and that I am developing my own drawing style with each sketch that I do.

That’s all for now.

SEW SEW SEW… ALL DAY LONG.

So as promised I am here to update. I have spent the last 5 hours sewing and getting on with university work. I still have plenty of work to be getting on with but whilst I stop {finally} for some lunch, I thought I’d upload a few images for you to see. Here you can see four pieces of work I have been working on,. Two are very simple outline sewn pieces of Minnie and Mickey mouse. The other two are slightly more dysfunctional, they are inspired by they Dada movement where art work was very collage based. I am pleased with the overall outcome and I think they are a good representation of my disneyfied personality. {yes! that’s a made up word.}

you’ll hear from me soon. Enjoy my first images on my blog of my artwork. There will be plenty more to follow.
